What Is Vitamin K2 (MK-7)? What It Does

MK-7 is one form of vitamin K2. It supports normal vitamin K-dependent proteins, while claims that a supplement protects bones or arteries need more careful evidence.

Vitamin K2 is a family of vitamin K forms called menaquinones. MK-7 is one member of that family. Your body uses vitamin K to activate certain proteins involved in normal blood clotting and bone metabolism. That is established biology. Whether taking extra MK-7 improves bone density or keeps arteries clear is a different question, and the human trials do not support a universal promise.

MK-7 appears in fermented foods, especially natto, and in supplements. It often shares a label with vitamin D3. The pairing is easy to explain mechanistically, but a neat pathway diagram is not a clinical outcome. Here is what MK-7 actually is, where the research gets interesting, and where the copy on a bottle can get ahead of the data.

The short answer

  • MK-7 is a form of vitamin K2, not a separate vitamin with its own official intake target.
  • Vitamin K helps activate proteins used in clotting and bone metabolism.
  • A three-year MK-7 trial changed an osteocalcin biomarker but did not improve bone mineral density versus placebo.
  • People taking warfarin or related vitamin K antagonists need consistent vitamin K intake and medical guidance before any K2 supplement.

What is vitamin K2, exactly?

Vitamin K is the umbrella name. Vitamin K1, or phylloquinone, is prominent in leafy green vegetables. Vitamin K2 covers several menaquinones, identified by names such as MK-4 and MK-7. Those names describe chemical side-chain lengths, not a league table of health outcomes. NIH ODS explains that K-dependent enzymes modify proteins so they can function normally.

Vitamin K is best known for its role in clotting. It also participates in the activation of osteocalcin, a protein associated with bone, and matrix Gla protein, studied in vascular tissues. These facts make the research plausible. They do not show that swallowing an MK-7 capsule diverts calcium from an artery into a bone like a miniature traffic officer.

What is MK-7 compared with MK-4 and K1?

Vitamin K names without the marketing fog
Name What it is Typical context
K1 / phylloquinone A vitamin K form abundant in leafy greens. Major form measured in many food tables.
K2 / MK-4 A menaquinone the body can also form from K1. Present in some animal foods; used at high doses in some older trials.
K2 / MK-7 A longer-chain menaquinone. Associated with fermented foods such as natto and common in supplements.

Do not transfer a result from a 45 mg/day MK-4 study to a microgram-dose MK-7 product. The form, dose, study population, and endpoint all differ. Likewise, an increase in a circulating MK-7 measure does not prove a lower risk of fracture or a cardiovascular event. ODS reviews the mixed clinical evidence.

What does MK-7 do in the body?

Like other vitamin K forms, MK-7 can supply the vitamin K activity needed for carboxylation of certain proteins. Clotting factors require that process. Bone-associated osteocalcin is another example. A lab can measure undercarboxylated osteocalcin as a marker of vitamin K-dependent activity. If a supplement lowers that marker, it shows a biological effect. It does not, on its own, establish that bone density improved or a fracture was avoided.

The distinction is important because many claims leap from the first sentence to the last. Mechanism offers a reason to run a trial. A trial needs to measure outcomes that matter to people, not only a protein in blood.

What did human MK-7 trials find?

A useful counterweight to overconfident claims is a three-year randomized, double-blind trial in 142 postmenopausal women with osteopenia. All received calcium and vitamin D3; one group also took 375 micrograms of MK-7 daily, and the other took placebo. After one year, undercarboxylated osteocalcin fell substantially in the MK-7 group. After three years, however, bone mineral density and measured bone microarchitecture were not significantly different between groups. MK-7 clearly moved one marker in this setting; the more practical endpoints did not follow.

Other studies differ in their populations, doses, and outcomes, which is why NIH ODS says it is unclear whether vitamin K supplements reduce osteoporosis risk. The same caution applies to claims about arterial calcification: vitamin K-dependent proteins are involved, but routine MK-7 supplementation has not been established as a way to prevent cardiovascular disease. The Infinite Labs product was not tested in the trial above.

Where is vitamin K2 found?

Natto, a fermented soybean food, is especially associated with MK-7. Various cheeses and animal foods can provide menaquinones, though amounts differ with food type and production. For overall vitamin K, leafy greens are a major K1 source. Food-composition databases are much stronger for K1 than for the many K2 forms, so a perfect daily MK-7 tally is harder than a label makes it look.

Most adults are not walking around with clinically significant vitamin K deficiency. NIH ODS says deficiency is rare in healthy adults and more likely in settings such as malabsorption or drugs that interfere with vitamin K. Do not treat vague fatigue or an internet symptom list as a K2-deficiency diagnosis.

How much vitamin K or MK-7 do you need?

There is no US recommended daily allowance for MK-7 specifically. For vitamin K as a whole, NIH ODS sets an Adequate Intake of 120 micrograms daily for adult men and 90 micrograms daily for adult women. These are intake guides, not promises that adding more MK-7 leads to better outcomes. NIH has not established a vitamin K upper limit because evidence of toxicity is limited, but “no established UL” does not cancel medication interactions.

The label should state the form and micrograms of vitamin K per serving. Compare that with your diet and medication situation. The current Infinite Labs Vegan D3/K2 capsule page lists 100 mcg K2 as MK-7 and 4,000 IU (100 mcg) D3 per capsule. That D3 amount equals the adult upper limit from all sources. Check your bottle and discuss the dose with a clinician if considering daily use; the trials cited here did not test this finished capsule.

Why is warfarin the big caution?

Warfarin and similar vitamin K antagonist medicines work by opposing vitamin K activity. A sudden increase or decrease in vitamin K intake can change their effect. The answer is not to avoid every green vegetable forever; it is to keep intake consistent and work with the prescriber who monitors anticoagulation. NIH ODS warns that the interaction can be serious. Do not start, stop, or change an MK-7 supplement while taking warfarin without medical guidance.

If you take a different blood thinner, do not assume the same rule or the opposite rule applies. Ask your pharmacist about your exact drug. Product labels are a useful starting point; your medication plan is the authority.

Frequently asked questions

Is MK-7 the same as vitamin K2?

MK-7 is one form of vitamin K2. K2 also includes MK-4 and other menaquinones.

Is K2 better than K1?

They are different vitamin K forms. Evidence does not establish a universal clinical winner. A balanced diet supplies K1, while certain fermented and animal foods provide K2 forms.

Does MK-7 “send calcium to bones”?

Vitamin K-dependent proteins participate in bone biology. That phrase oversimplifies the mechanism and implies an outcome that needs human trial evidence. One three-year MK-7 trial changed a protein marker without improving bone density against placebo.

Can I take K2 without D3?

They are separate nutrients with separate roles. A paired capsule is a packaging choice, not a physiological requirement for every person. Assess intake and dose of each.

Can I take MK-7 with warfarin?

Only with direct guidance from the prescriber managing your anticoagulation. Do not change vitamin K intake on your own.

The practical takeaway

MK-7 is real vitamin K biology, and its effect on vitamin K-dependent proteins is measurable. The leap from protein markers to guaranteed bone or artery benefits is where the evidence gets thinner. If you are shopping, check the exact dose and medication interactions first. If a product promises more, ask for a human trial with the outcome and formula it is claiming.
