Infinite One: Green Coffee Beans
Table of Contents
Coffee has been found to have numerous health benefits, such as can lower diabetes risks. This is because one of the active ingredients in coffee, chlorogenic acid reduces blood sugar levels. It also increases insulin sensitivity and decreases the storage of both fat and sugar (carbohydrate). One of these antioxidants has been of particular interest to scientists who are studying coffee beans: chlorogenic acid. Chlorogenic acid is a type of antioxidant known as a polyphenol. There are over 4000 different polyphenols. It is thought that many of the health benefits delivered by coffee are related to the presence of this plant compound. Green Coffee Bean extract is a concentrated source of dietary chlorogenic acid that has been shown to be a notable source of caffeine while simultaneously assisting in glycemic control and glucose metabolism.
There are multiple studies showing positive effects of the chlorogenic acid on metabolism and weight loss efforts. One study involved human subjects who consumed a high dose of green coffee bean extract supplement (1050mg) for two weeks, a small dose green coffee bean supplement (700mg) for two weeks, and a placebo for two weeks. There were two-week periods in between when the subjects did not take any of the three supplements. The study showed the green coffee bean extract supplementation resulted in decreases in body weight, body mass index, body fat percent, and even small decreases in heart rate. There were no significant changes in the diet or exercise of the subjects and the changes happened when the subjects were taking green coffee bean extract. The possible weight-loss factor behind green coffee bean extract and the chlorogenic acid it contains may have to do with chlorogenic acid effects on sugar absorption from starch and on fat synthesis in the body.
In a study published in 2007 in “The Journal of International Medical Research”, researchers found that when human subjects consumed instant coffee enriched with chlorogenic acid, they lost weight due to decreased absorption of glucose sugar. There are many studies on mice or rats, such as the study published in “Biochemical Pharmacology” in 2013, showing that chlorogenic acid decreases fat synthesis and improves cholesterol and triglyceride levels.

Green Coffee Reduces Lipogenic Genes
Researchers think the key components of green coffee beans chlorogenic acid helps regulate hunger and satiety, helping people lose weight. They also point that chlorogenic acid can regulate glucose absorption and carbohydrate metabolism as possible sources of benefit. A green coffee bean is one that has not been roasted and in its natural form. Once roasted the bean has a reduced amount of chlorogenic acid. Studies investigating the health benefits of green coffee beans have been positive. One study published in the Journal of Molecular Nutrition & Food Research showed that people who drank four daily cups green coffee beans lost 1.5 pounds of body fat in four weeks, additionally studies have shown that green coffee beans can reduce DNA damage.
It has long been thought that the active ingredient caffeine has been the active ingredient in coffee, which has fat burning effects. Several studies suggest that coffee consumption helps prevent chronic diseases, including type 2 diabetes, liver diseases, and Parkinson’s disease. These benefits of coffee are thought to be to attributed to caffeine, which is abundant in coffee. Scientists are now discovering that coffee also contains many phenolic compounds otherwise known as coffee polyphenols (CPP), such as caffeoyl quinic acids and feruloyl quinic acids. It has been reported that a 200-ml cup of roasted ground coffee supplies 73 approximately 20 to 675 mg coffee polyphenols, and the daily intake of coffee polyphenols by a coffee drinker is as much as 1 g.
Researchers fed rats a high-fat diet and administered coffee polyphenols to the rats, which was devoid of caffeine. Interestingly, at the end of the study found that long-term intake of coffee polyphenols significantly suppressed high-fat-diet-induced visceral and liver fat accumulation, attenuated the increase in plasma glucose and insulin concentrations, and concomitantly increased energy expenditure. Some interesting discoveries were made, Histological analysis of the adipose tissue revealed that coffee polyphenols -fed mice had smaller adipocytes than high fat-fed mice without coffee polyphenols, which correlated with a lower number of infiltrating macrophages. Energy expenditure evaluated by indirect calorimetry was significantly increased in coffee polyphenols -fed mice. Coffee polyphenols also downregulated lipogenic enzymes in adipose tissue as well. This study demonstrates that coffee polyphenols in coffee can have an additive effect on reducing lipogenic genes and can have added effects on fat loss.
